about

Black-Hearted Beauty. The coming of the oil business to the North East has been a mixed blessing. The wealth created seemed to accompany a hard-nosed attitude to others, and the gulf between rich and poor widened. The city has been scarred by some truly hideous buildings, too!

lyrics

BLACK-HEARTED BEAUTY
Oh the oil has been good to many
The ones who watched the black gold roll in
But, like haar it made it hard to see
The churches turning into nightclubs
Pilgrims going to shopping centres
To worship i-pad idols fervently
Buy to let by greedy grabbers
With Council housing sold forever
Poor folk find it hard to simply be

The city has the scars to prove
It’s full of hard men who are full of hard hearts
With granite fists they map the money’d route
By scratching backs that are scratching backs
And every car is an Austin-tatious
With personalised number plates to boot
They build the shoddy concrete buildings
That hide away the ancient hearts
But the concrete - it bears a golden fruit!

And the oil has been cruel to many
The ones who lost a child or father
Or a lover gone some decades far too soon
The companies still make their money
With everything going on as normal
This funeral should’ve been a honeymoon
Golden treasure, silver city
Black-hearted beauty you’ll be used
And then discarded some dark afternoon
